The Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, has decided to return his award, the Knight’s Cross of the Order “For Merit of the Republic of Poland,” to Poland. He announced this on his Facebook page.
The ambassador stated that the majority of Ukrainians view Poland as a friendly nation, a reliable ally, and an important partner. As an example, he recalled the extensive support provided by the Polish side to Ukraine in the initial months of the full-scale invasion. The diplomat also noted that Kyiv and Warsaw are united by a significant number of common interests, particularly in matters of security and regional stability.
According to Bodnar, in his role, he has consistently worked towards strengthening Ukrainian-Polish cooperation and finding solutions to all current issues. He emphasized that tangible positive results have been achieved in the development of bilateral relations over the past year and a half.
– However, I cannot remain indifferent to a decision that I consider historically unjust. Understanding the emotions prevailing in Poland, I cannot accept that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy – a friend of Poland, the head of state bravely defending against the Russian aggressor and upholding peace in Europe – has been stripped of the highest Polish award, he stated.
As the ambassador noted, in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, under attacks by missiles and drones, this decision is perceived as particularly painful and emotional, like a gesture towards the entire Ukrainian people. In light of these circumstances, he decided to return the award to the Polish side.
- On June 20, the Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Kyrylo Budanov, refused the Order “For Merit to Poland.”
- On June 19, Sibig sharply reacted to the deprivation of Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle and returned his Polish awards.
